Imagine a world where every one of the billions of lightbulbs in use today is a wireless hotspot delivering connectivity at speeds that can only be dreamed of with Wi-Fi. LiFi or Light Fidelity is a wireless optical networking technology that uses light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for data transmission. LiFi is designed to use LED light bulbs similar to those currently in use in many energy-conscious homes and offices.
Among the benefits of LiFi are higher speeds than Wi-Fi. 10000 times the frequency spectrum of radio. It has significant applications in several fields - the most significant being that it can be safely used in hospitals as it emits no electromagnetic interference and is therefore safe in presence of medical equipment. Downside so far is that it can operate only within the room it is installed in. Once you move away, the connection snaps.
